Can I install a 22kW charger at home in Scotland?

In most cases, no. A 22kW charger requires a three-phase electricity supply, which is rare in residential properties in Scotland. Most homes have a single-phase supply, which limits charging speed to 7kW.

Is 7kW fast enough? — For the vast majority of EV owners, absolutely. A 7kW charger adds about 30 miles of range per hour. Plugging in when you get home in the evening gives you a full charge by morning — even for vehicles with large 70-80kWh batteries. Most people drive 20-40 miles per day, so even a few hours of charging is more than enough.

Three-phase at home — If you do have a three-phase supply (some larger or rural properties in Central Scotland have them), we can install a 22kW charger. We also handle three-phase upgrades if you want one, though the upgrade cost (£3,000-£5,000 from your DNO) rarely makes financial sense for home charging alone.

Commercial properties — 22kW chargers are common in workplaces, car parks, and commercial premises where vehicles need faster turnaround. We install commercial 22kW systems with load balancing across Central Scotland.

Mackie Electrical Services will assess your supply during a free site survey and recommend the best option for your setup.
