Solar that suits how Falkirk homes are actually built

• The older terraces near the town centre and Grahamston: smaller roofs, often with a chimney throwing shade for part of the day. We work around that with panel layout and, where it helps, panel- level optimisers so one shaded panel doesn't drag the rest down.
• The 1950s to 70s housing and the newer estates out by Polmont and Camelon: usually decent unbroken roof space and a straightforward run down to the consumer unit. These tend to be the easy ones.
• Larger detached homes round Bantaskine and Lionthorn: more roof to play with, so there's room for a bigger array and a battery if you want to store the daytime power and use it at night.

Does solar even work this far north?

Aye, it does. Panels run on daylight, not heat, so they actually perform a bit better in our cooler Scottish climate than in somewhere baking hot. A standard 4kW system around Falkirk generates roughly 3,300-3,600 kWh over the year. You won't get much out of them on a dreich December afternoon, but spring and summer more than make up for it.

Here's roughly what a typical install does for you:

• Lower bills: you use your own free electricity during the day instead of buying it. How much you save depends on how much you're home and using power while the sun's up.

Battery, EV charging and the grid paperwork

A lot of Falkirk folk are clocking up motorway miles on the M9 and M876, so pairing solar with an EV charger comes up a lot — charge the car off your own roof when you can, top up overnight on a cheap tariff when you can't. Adding a battery is the other common one: it stores your daytime generation so you're not buying it back at teatime when prices are highest.
