Can you upgrade my old fuse box to a modern consumer unit?

Yes. Consumer unit upgrades are one of our most common and most important jobs. A modern consumer unit dramatically improves the electrical safety of your property.

Why upgrade? — Old-style fuse boxes (with rewirable fuses or cartridge fuses) do not have RCD (Residual Current Device) protection. RCDs detect earth faults and disconnect the supply in milliseconds, preventing electric shocks and reducing the risk of electrical fires. Modern consumer units also include surge protection (mandatory in new installations since 2022) which protects your appliances from voltage spikes.

Signs you need an upgrade:

- Your fuse box has rewirable fuses (with visible fuse wire) - It uses old-style cartridge fuses - It does not have RCD trip switches - It is a wooden or black Bakelite box - You are adding new circuits (EV charger, solar, extension)

What is involved — We replace your existing fuse box with a modern dual-RCD or RCBO consumer unit. The job typically takes 4-6 hours. We need to isolate the power for most of this time, so we recommend planning accordingly.

Cost — £400-£800 depending on the number of circuits and the complexity of your existing wiring. We provide a fixed-price quote after inspecting your current setup.

After the upgrade — We test every circuit, issue your Electrical Installation Certificate, and leave you with a labelled, compliant consumer unit. All work meets current BS 7671 regulations and is NICEIC certified.
