Do I need permission to install a home battery?

You do not need planning permission for a home battery in most cases. However, you do need approval from your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) to connect the battery to the grid.

Planning permission — Home battery storage is classified as Permitted Development in Scotland. You do not need planning permission unless your property is a listed building or in a conservation area, or if the battery is being installed in an outbuilding that requires consent.

DNO notification — This is the important one. Any battery system connected to the grid requires notification to your DNO (typically SSEN in Central Scotland). For systems under 3.68kW, a G98 notification is required — this is a simple form and is usually approved automatically. For larger systems, a G99 application is needed, which can take up to 45 days for approval.

Building regulations — Battery installations must comply with BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations). All our installations are carried out by NICEIC-approved electricians and are fully certified.

We handle everything — Mackie Electrical Services manages the DNO notification, building regulations compliance, and all certification as part of our standard installation service. You do not need to contact your DNO, fill in forms, or arrange inspections yourself.

Your battery is installed and operational on the day of installation — the DNO notification runs in the background.
