Can I retrofit a battery to an old solar system?

Yes. Retrofitting a battery to an existing solar system is one of our most common jobs. It does not matter how old your system is or who installed it.

AC-coupled batteries — This is the standard retrofit method. An AC-coupled battery (like the Tesla Powerwall or GivEnergy AC) connects to your existing system without touching your solar wiring or inverter. It monitors your generation and consumption in real time, automatically storing excess solar energy that would otherwise be exported.

What about my Feed-in Tariff? — If you are on the old Feed-in Tariff (FIT), adding a battery does not affect your payments. You continue to receive your generation tariff as before. The battery simply lets you use more of your own generation instead of exporting it at a lower rate.

Compatibility — AC-coupled batteries work with any existing solar inverter brand. We do not need to replace or modify your current equipment. Installation typically takes half a day.

Is it worth it? — If you are currently exporting a lot of solar energy (check your export meter or generation meter), a battery lets you use that energy yourself instead. With import prices around 24p/kWh and export rates around 5-15p/kWh, storing and using your own energy saves you significantly more than selling it.
