Where is the best place to install a home battery?

Batteries work best in moderate temperatures. A garage, utility room, or sheltered external wall are the most common installation locations.

Indoor installation (preferred) — A garage or utility room is ideal. The battery stays at a moderate temperature year-round, which maximises its efficiency and lifespan. Batteries generate very little noise (a quiet hum) and no fumes, so they are safe to install in occupied spaces. They do need adequate ventilation — we ensure this during the survey.

Outdoor installation — Some batteries are IP65 rated and designed for outdoor use, including the Tesla Powerwall and GivEnergy All-in-One. However, we always recommend a sheltered spot where possible — under an eave, on a north-facing wall out of direct sun, or in a covered area. Scottish winters can be harsh, and while the batteries tolerate cold, extreme cold reduces charging efficiency.

Where NOT to install — Avoid locations with direct sunlight, next to heat sources (boilers, tumble dryers), or in areas prone to flooding. Batteries should not be installed in bedrooms or living spaces as a precaution.

Proximity to your consumer unit — The closer the battery is to your consumer unit, the shorter the cable run and the cheaper the installation. We plan the optimal location during your site survey, balancing performance, aesthetics, and installation cost.
