The funding landscape for solar in Scotland has changed significantly. Here is what is currently available for homeowners:
0% VAT on solar and batteries — Solar panels and battery storage installations are 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. This applies whether you install solar on its own, a battery on its own, or both together. That saves you around 20% compared to the standard rate. This is automatic — no application needed.
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — If you generate more solar electricity than you use, your energy supplier pays you for the excess. Rates are typically 5-15p per kWh exported. You need an MCS-certified installation to qualify — which is standard with Mackie Electrical.
Home Energy Scotland — HES no longer funds standalone solar PV installations. Their interest-free loans and grants now focus on heat pumps and energy efficiency packages. Solar is only funded by HES when installed as part of a heat pump package.
