Frequently asked questions

Why are my Octopus rates different from someone in Edinburgh?

Every UK postcode sits in one of 14 distribution regions. Southern Scotland (SP Energy Networks, region letter N) covers most of the Central Belt — Edinburgh is on the same region, but Perth and Inverness are not. The unit prices and standing charges differ slightly between regions, which is why this calculator uses live data tagged to your specific region rather than a national average.

Is Octopus Go or Intelligent Octopus Go better for me?

Go gives you a fixed five-hour cheap window overnight regardless of when you actually charge. Intelligent Go schedules your charging through the Octopus app or your compatible charger and gives you a longer cheap window — but only counts the slots you actually use. If you have a Zappi, Ohme, Hypervolt or Tesla Wall Connector and a smart meter, Intelligent Go almost always works out cheaper, but you do need the right hardware. We can configure either when we install your charger.

Should I switch to Octopus Agile if I have an EV?

Agile prices change every half hour and are typically cheapest in the early hours and at midday when there's surplus wind generation in Scotland. If you can schedule your charging through your charger app to hit the cheapest 4-hour window each night, Agile often beats Go for sub-30-mile daily mileage. For high-mileage drivers (over ~100 miles/day) Go's flat cheap rate is usually a safer bet because Agile slots can occasionally spike.

Does Mackie install EV chargers across Southern Scotland?

Yes — our OZEV-approved team installs 7kW and 22kW chargers across Stirling, Falkirk, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Dollar, Bearsden, Helensburgh, Alloa and the surrounding areas. We handle the DNO notification (G98/G99) where needed and configure your charger and tariff together so the savings shown in this calculator actually land on your bill.

How accurate is this calculator?

The unit rates are accurate to whatever Octopus publishes on their public API right now — refreshed every hour. Where this estimate is rougher is your real-world driving: actual EV efficiency varies with weather and driving style (a Tesla Model Y averages around 3.7 mi/kWh, an older EV closer to 3.0). The annual figure assumes you can shift all your charging to the cheap window — which is realistic for overnight tariffs and most drivers, but not for everyone.

Need a charger installed in Southern Scotland?

Mackie's in-house OZEV-approved team handles every step — site survey, DNO notification, installation and tariff setup. No outsourced labour.
