Live Octopus rates · Northern Scotland

Battery savings calculator Northern Scotland

Pick your battery size, your usage and your tariff — we calculate today's daily benefit using the live Flux import-vs-export spread (and Agile equivalents) for the SSEN region. Highland rates aren't the same as Central Belt rates, so this matters more than most battery calculators acknowledge.

Built for homes in Perth, Auchterarder, Crieff, Pitlochry, Aberfeldy and the wider Perthshire region.

What would a battery actually save you today?

Roughly how big is the battery you're thinking about?

Common Scottish residential sizes: 5kWh single Powerwall module, 10kWh GivEnergy or Powerwall 3 entry, 15kWh+ for heavy users.

Today's spread, not last year's

Flux and Agile rates move. This calculator uses what your battery would actually earn on today's SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) prices.

Built for your region

Northern Scotland (SSEN) routinely sees the cheapest wholesale prices in the UK when wind generation is high, which is most of the winter. Battery owners on Agile here often see the biggest spreads in the country.

Frequently asked questions

Is a battery worth it in rural Perthshire or the Highlands?

Often yes, but the maths is different from the Central Belt. Northern Scotland gets a lot of wind, which means Agile prices can swing wider — sometimes negative — making battery scheduling more lucrative. Solar yield is lower than the Central Belt in winter, but a south-facing roof in summer still produces a meaningful surplus. The biggest win is usually shifting evening peak import via the battery rather than peak export, because your home loads (heating, cooking, EV charging) tend to coincide with national peak.

Are Flux and Intelligent Flux available in Northern Scotland?

Both are sold on the SSEN region (region letter P), with the same banded structure as Southern Scotland but at slightly different unit prices and standing charges. Intelligent Octopus Flux availability depends on having a compatible smart meter and either a Tesla Powerwall 3 or another supported inverter brand. We confirm eligibility for your postcode and hardware as part of the survey.

What battery brands do you install in Perth and Perthshire?

We install Tesla Powerwall (including Powerwall 3 with built-in solar inverter), GivEnergy, Growatt, Fox ESS, Puredrive and Solax. Choice depends on whether you're retrofitting onto an existing solar system (AC-coupled) or installing as part of a new solar install (hybrid inverter), plus whether you need EPS backup functionality during outages — which is genuinely useful in rural areas where SSEN supplies can drop in winter storms.

Will Mackie travel to Perth, Pitlochry or Aberfeldy?

Yes — our base in Kinlochard (FK8 3TP) is well-placed for Perthshire installs. Perth, Crieff, Auchterarder, Pitlochry and Aberfeldy are all within standard travel range and don't carry extra charges. For sites further north please call to confirm before requesting a survey.

What about 0% VAT and Home Energy Scotland funding?

Battery installs qualify for 0% VAT in Scotland under the energy-saving materials zero rate until 31 March 2027 — that applies in Highland and Perthshire just as it does in the Central Belt. Home Energy Scotland's interest-free loan scheme can cover part of the cost of batteries when installed alongside solar PV; we can walk you through eligibility at survey stage.
